    About the program

    Why This Project Matters

Hospitals in Zanzibar operate with limited staff and limited resources, while patient numbers remain high. In a hospital in Kitogani, local doctors and nurses handle this daily, often across multiple departments, including internal medicine and maternity care.

Volunteers provide additional support in this setting: assisting staff, observing procedures, and, depending on experience, taking on more responsibility over time. No prior medical background is required to start, though experience does affect the level of involvement you'll have.

    Your Project

This project takes place in a hospital in Kitogani, where you'll support the local medical team across different departments. Your exact role depends on your experience and the hospital's current needs. Good to know: for medical students, this project can also count as a clinical traineeship, and for pre-med students, it serves as a practical internship.

Your Typical Tasks as a Volunteer Include:

    • Supporting local doctors and nurses in their daily hospital routine
    • Observing and assisting in departments such as internal medicine or maternity
    • Caring for newborns, including weighing, bathing, and general support for babies and mothers
    • Observing and assisting during surgeries and other medical procedures
    • Taking on more independent tasks over time, depending on your experience and initiative
Note: Standards may differ from what you're used to in Europe, and that's part of what makes the experience so valuable.
Location: Your project takes place in a hospital in Kitogani, on Zanzibar's south coast. wayers shuttle takes you to and from the project, included in your program.

Life at Life the Tropical Villa

You'll live at the wayers Home, a villa with pool and palm-shaded gardens, exclusive for wayers volunteers. Rooms are shared (max. 4 people), with private double or single rooms available for a surcharge.

Breakfast and dinner are provided Monday to Friday, mixing Tanzanian staples like chapati and plantains with international dishes. On weekends, the fully equipped house kitchen is yours to use. Vegan, gluten-free, or lactose-free options are available for a small weekly surcharge; just let us know when booking.

Surroundings: The beach is a 15 to 20 minute walk away, or 5 minutes by scooter or taxi, perfect for swimming or snorkeling in the lagoon. Lively Paje, just a short ride further, offers kitesurfing spots, beach bars, and a livelier scene whenever you're looking for more activity.

    Weekends & Free Time

Your project runs Monday to Friday, leaving afternoons and weekends free to explore. Living together at the wayers Home naturally brings volunteers close, whether relaxing by the pool, at the beach, or heading out to lively Paje. Many also use their free time to discover the island as a group.

Included Excursions: Your program includes a snorkeling trip to Michamwi's coral reefs and a spice tour through Zanzibar's inland farms. Optional add-ons, like a Safari Tour on the mainland Tansania or a Surfcamp in Paje, let you extend the adventure.

    Travel with Confidence

As a German tour operator with over 22 years of experience and more than 70,000 participants sent abroad, wayers supports you with visa guidance, insurance information, and a personal welcome on arrival, backed by a 24/7 emergency line in Germany and on the ground.

    Typical day

You'll volunteer about 5 hours a day at the hospital. (Mon-Fri)

Morning: Your shift usually begins early in the morning, supporting local doctors and nurses with their daily tasks. Exactly how much you get involved depends on your experience: this project involves a fair amount of observing, watching procedures and even surgeries, while also assisting where you can. As you settle in and show initiative, you may be given more hands-on tasks. It's worth simply asking, politely, whether you can help with something or take on a small task yourself, always with attentiveness and respect toward staff and patients.

Midday: Your shift wraps up around 1:00 pm, and you're shuttled back to the wayers Home, with the rest of the day free.

Afternoon: As volunteers gradually return from their different projects, the wayers Home starts to fill up again. Free time is yours to spend as you like, whether that means relaxing by the pool, heading to the beach, or taking a trip to Paje.

Evening: Dinner is shared together at the wayers Home, where the day's stories come together. How the evening continues is up to you: some enjoy a late dip in the pool at the house, others head out to Paje for a drink, and others prefer an early night.

    Free-time activities

Between project days, much of your free time unfolds right at the wayers Home: relaxing by the pool with a book, or simply spending time with fellow volunteers. The wayers Home is located in Bwejuu, a quiet coastal village on Zanzibar's south coast, known for its fine white sand and turquoise waters. Life here moves at its own pace: fishing boats dot the shoreline, palm trees line the beach, and the wide lagoon reveals itself at low tide, perfect for long walks or spotting local sea life.

While Bwejuu itself stays quiet and authentic, lively Paje is just a short ride away, known for its kitesurfing scene, beach bars, and restaurants. Stone Town, Zanzibar's historic capital, is about an hour's drive further, worth a visit for its UNESCO-listed old town, spice markets, and architecture.

Your program also includes two excursions with fellow volunteers: a snorkeling trip to the coral reefs just off the coast, and a spice tour through Zanzibar's inland farms. For those seeking additional adventure, optional extras such as a Safari Tour on the mainland or a Surfcamp in Paje are also available.
