About Wild Horse Rescue Center (WHRC)

The Wild Horse Rescue Center (WHRC) is dedicated to the preservation of America's wild horses. Since 2007, we have remained committed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit center to compassionately rescue, rehabilitate, and provide forever homes for wild horses, equines, burros, and other vulnerable creatures. Volunteers are an integral part of our mission, helping us provide the care and rehabilitation these animals need while also fighting against the mistreatment of wild horses.

Located in Central Florida, WHRC offers a peaceful, hands-on environment where volunteers can connect with rescued and wild horses. This unique setting allows volunteers to make a meaningful impact, gain valuable equine experience, and enjoy Florida's natural beauty.

    Volunteer Program Overview

Anyone over 18 years old is welcome to volunteer, regardless of experience level. Volunteers help with:

    • Daily horse care and barn maintenance

    • Assisting in the rehabilitation of wild horses, burros, and other rescued animals

    • Socializing wild/semi-wild mustangs

    • Learning from equine professionals about wild horse behavior and training

While riding opportunities are available, our primary focus is rescue work and rehabilitation. All rides are done in groups with a staff member—volunteers cannot take horses off-site individually.

    What’s Included in Your Stay:

    • Lodging: Comfortable rooms in either a bunkhouse or cabins.

    • Meals: Volunteers are responsible for their own meals. WHRC does not provide food, but we offer access to a fully equipped kitchen with essential items like spices, flour, sugar, coffee, and tea.

    • Transportation: We provide transportation from Orlando International Airport to WHRC and for all off-site activities sponsored by the center.

    • Wi-Fi & Support: Free Wi-Fi and 24/7 support from WHRC staff.

    • Activities: Explore Central Florida during your time off, including beach trips, kayaking, festivals, and more (volunteers pay for off-site activities).

    Volunteer Requirements:

    • Must be 18+ and able to communicate in English (intermediate level or higher). A Zoom call will be required to confirm English proficiency.

    • Volunteers should be prepared to engage in all activities, with tasks adjusted for any physical limitations.

    Typical day

A typical day at WHRC starts between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM, depending on the season. During the summer, we start earlier and take more breaks to avoid the heat.

Morning Chores: Your day begins with morning chores, including cleaning horse pens and caring for our dogs, chickens, and pigs. You'll also help with feeding and haying the animals. If you're a long-term volunteer (at least 8 weeks), you'll spend time with your assigned project horse, grooming, medicating, and bonding with them according to their needs.

Lunch Break: Lunch typically runs from noon to 3:00 PM, depending on the weather and season.

Afternoon Activities: In the afternoon, you'll help with horse training and rehabilitation. This may involve working alongside Diane, the owner, or other staff members. If your experience allows, you may even participate in training sessions.

    Daily Responsibilities:

    • You’ll be responsible for cleaning your living area each day.

    • The length of your stay determines the tasks you'll be involved in. The longer you stay, the more opportunities you’ll have to work with the horses.

Flexibility is Key: A day at WHRC involves hard work, as we are a full-scale rescue center. Schedules can change based on the animals' needs, weather, and other factors. We ask that you stay flexible, keep an open mind, and bring a positive attitude! If you do, you'll love your experience with us.

    Free-time activities

Get ready to enjoy Florida’s local charm, natural beauty, and vibrant culture through eco-friendly outdoor activities sponsored by WHRC. These outings may include trail rides, kayaking adventures, beach days, trips to local flea markets, festivals, and outdoor concerts. WHRC provides transportation for these excursions, and volunteers simply cover their own costs for things like admission, rentals, food, and souvenirs.

During your personal free time, relax in the peaceful surroundings of the center, take a dip in the cowboy soaking pool by the bunkhouse, or enjoy quiet moments with our rescued animals. For those eager to explore beyond the center, Central Florida has something for everyone—from stunning natural springs, wildlife parks, and scenic hiking trails to world-famous attractions like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Kennedy Space Center.

Due to our remote location, transportation is limited, with some Uber options available, but renting a car will provide the most flexibility for your adventures.
