    About the program

Especially in the winter months, Santiago de Chile is struggling with a big smog problem. This makes it all the more important that the huge hills, also known as the largest inner city park of Latin America, are maintained and reforested. Santiago needs its green lung!

The huge inner-city park is located in the heart of Santiago de Chile and extends over several hills. The park was founded in 1917 and has since served as an important retreat in the green for the residents of Santiago de Chile. The park is also one of the main tourist attractions due to its wide range of leisure activities and magnificent viewpoints overlooking the city of Santiago de Chile and the Andes Mountains.

The park stretches over 700 hectares and in the extensive hilly green areas and forests, visitors will not only find rich nature and environmental education, but also recreation, cultural offers and plenty of sports facilities, always in constant contact with nature. In addition to the Chilean National Zoo are other tourist attractions, such as fantastic platforms offering breathtaking views on the city and mountains, a gondola and rack railway as well as countless hiking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, swimming pools, etc.

In such a large park there is really a lot to do in order to maintain the park, water the plants, reforest dry or burned areas, advising visitors and creating new areas of interest, etc. The work areas can roughly be classified as follows:

    1. Working outdoors: Maintaining the park, cutting back trees and plants, watering, and the like.
    2. Environmental Education: educate children and young people on environmental issues through practical examples and workshops.
    3. Environmental protection and reforestation: protection and restoration of biodiversity in the park, assistance in the greenhouse and maintenance work.
    4. Visitor Center: Participate in the Visitor Center at the entrance of the park, inform visitors and give instructions on how to use the park (in different languages).
    5. Standalone projects: Dedicated volunteers and those with appropriate (technical) knowledge or ideas will be encouraged to develop independent projects to improve the park and / or environmental education and / or environmental issues.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
