    One Ocean Empire is a community-based, not-for-profit conservation centre based in Sabah, Borneo. For the past 9 years, we have operated fully off-grid on Usukan Island, restoring coral reefs, protecting coastal forests, and training local youth in long-term environmental stewardship.

    The environmental challenges we face are real:

    • Coral reef degradation from warming seas and human impact especially at Usukan Island

    • Coastal forest loss and habitat decline due to the presence of invasive species (mainland dogs)

    • Limited local access to conservation training and resources

    • Remote island logistics that make sustainability complex & difficult to maintain

    Our response is practical, long-term, and community-driven. We focus on organic coral propagation, forest protection, youth & local training, and nature-first decision making approach

    📌WHAT THIS ROLE IS ABOUT:📌

    The Field Volunteer role supports the operational backbone of the conservation centre. You will help maintain the systems that allow protection, training, and community programs to run safely and effectively.


    📌YOUR ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:📌

    As a Field Volunteer, you may assist with:

    • Basic repairs of wooden boardwalks and structural walkways.
    • Facility cleaning, painting, and general maintenance.
    • Tool organization and equipment care.
    • Simple construction support under supervision.
    • Improving storage areas, safety systems, and workflow spaces.
    • Small sustainability upgrades and efficiency improvements.
    • Logistical support across land and marine operations.

    📌YOUR WORK DIRECTLY SUPPORTS:📌

    • Volunteer and staff safety.
    • Community and youth conservation training programs.
    • Reef and rainforest restoration activities.
    • Daily centre operations and off-grid functionality.

    Without operational stability, conservation stops. This role ensures it doesn’t.

    📌WHERE YOU'LL BE LIVING & WORKING:📌

    Our centre is located on remote Usukan Island in Sabah, Borneo.

    We operate:

    • Fully off-grid (solar power, rainwater systems).
    • In a tropical island climate (heat, humidity, rain, insects).
    • Within walking distance of reefs, forests, and mangroves.

    Accommodation is simple, shared, and nature-integrated. This is not luxury living. It is intentional, low-impact island life designed around sustainability.

    Workspaces are outdoor and semi-outdoor environments. Expect exposure to sun, rain, mud, wood, tools, and real conditions.

    You will work alongside:

    • Our local Sabah-based conservation team.
    • Community members and sea-native youth trainees.
    • International volunteers and interns.
    • Occasionally but rarely: visiting researchers and professionals

    We operate as a team. Respect for local knowledge, structure, and safety protocols is essential.

    ⚠️WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU (IMPORTANT):⚠️

    We are looking for individuals who:

    • Are physically capable of moderate manual tasks.
    • Respect safety systems and follow instructions.
    • Show initiative and ownership.
    • Understand that meaningful work can be repetitive.
    • Are comfortable in remote, simple living conditions.
    Please understand that Conservation work here HIGHLY depends on weather, materials, tides, and project cycles. Some days will be physically demanding and project-heavy. Other days may be lighter, with fewer tasks or maintenance-focused work.
    We ask for flexibility and patience. Even slower days are part of real conservation operations — use them to support the team, improve systems, or rest responsibly.

    You do not need to be a construction expert.
    You do need to be responsible, adaptable, and grounded.

    Here is a list of items we recommend bringing for the Coral Ranger Program:

    1. Reef-Safe Sunscreen (Must Have)
    Reason: Protect your skin while ensuring no harmful chemicals enter the reef ecosystem.

    Reason: Required for coral propagation dives or snorkel activities.

    3. Rash Guard / Long Sleeve Swim Shirt (Recommended)
    Reason: Protection from sun exposure during long hours in the water.

    4. Personal Mask & Snorkel (Optional)
    Reason: While we provide equipment, many participants prefer using their own.

    5. Water Bottle (Must Have)
    Reason: Staying hydrated while reducing plastic waste on the island.

    6. Power Bank (Optional)
    Reason: Electricity is solar powered and limited.

    Reason: Useful after water activities or showers.

    9:15–11:45 AM – Morning Conservation Block (Primary Tasks – rotation varies by day)

    Life at One Ocean Empire is intentionally simple. The island is remote, quiet, and surrounded by nature — which means your free time looks very different from city life. It’s less about entertainment, and more about presence, connection, and slowing down.

    Below is what you can expect during your time off:

    🌊 Swim & Ocean Time

    The sea is right at your doorstep. Many volunteers choose to go for a swim to cool off after a work session or simply float and relax. The waters around the island are calm during suitable conditions, making it a refreshing way to unwind.

    Sunsets by the shoreline are often a highlight of the day.

    🌴 Hammock & Relaxation

    You can unwind in a hammock by the beach, read a book, journal, listen to music, or simply enjoy the sound of the waves. With limited internet and no city distractions, many volunteers find this to be a rare opportunity to mentally reset.

    This environment naturally encourages rest and reflection.

    🎲 Board Games & Social Time

    Evenings are often spent together in shared spaces. Volunteers frequently:

    • Play board games

    • Share stories and travel experiences

    • Discuss conservation topics

    • Plan future adventures

    The small group setting creates strong bonds and meaningful conversations.

    🐒 Optional Wildlife Experience (Self-Paid)

    If you wish to explore beyond the island, optional self-funded excursions can be arranged through our trusted partners. One popular experience is a river cruise along the Kinabatangan River, known for its rich biodiversity.

    On a cruise, you may have the opportunity to spot:

    • Proboscis monkeys

    • Hornbills

    • Crocodiles

    • Other native Bornean wildlife

    Please note: These excursions are not included in the volunteer program fee and are arranged separately at your own cost.

    There are:

    • No fast internet streaming

    Instead, you’ll experience:

    • Star-filled night skies

    • Ocean sounds instead of traffic

    Free time on the island is about embracing a slower rhythm. Many volunteers leave realizing that this simplicity — away from constant notifications and noise — becomes one of the most meaningful parts of their experience.

    If you come open-minded and ready to disconnect from routine life, your free time here will feel deeply rewarding.

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Accommodation

    VOLUNTEER ACCOMODATION

    Volunteers stay in private rooms within a traditional longhouse built on stilts, offering an authentic island experience. Each room is fully solar-powered, featuring a fan, a phone charging station, and a comfortable bed. Mosquito nets are provided for protection, and all lighting on the island is kept dim at night to safeguard local wildlife—practicing our “let night be night” approach.

    BATHROOM & SHOWER

    Bathrooms and showers are simple but clean, powered entirely by rainwater—don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe to use! Showers are limited to twice a day to help conserve water, so volunteers are asked to avoid over-showering and to be mindful of water use. Similarly, the bathroom is designed to prevent wastage, helping us maintain the delicate island ecosystem.

    COMMUNAL SPACES & ISLAND LIFE

    The longhouse has open-air lounges where volunteers can relax, enjoy the views of the surrounding forest and coastline, and connect with fellow volunteers. Meals are prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, giving you a taste of the island’s flavors. Waking up to birdsong and gentle waves is part of everyday life here, making your stay peaceful and immersive.

    This setup strikes a balance between comfort and sustainability, letting volunteers focus on conservation work while living in harmony with nature.

    START DATES & ARRIVAL DATES

    Your start date refers to the first official day of volunteering on the island, not the day you arrive in Kota Kinabalu.

    Volunteers must arrive in Kota Kinabalu at least one day before their program start date. This ensures sufficient time for rest, preparation, SIM card setup, purchasing supplies, and coordinating your transfer to the island.

    Example:
    If your program start date is Monday, you should arrive in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday (or earlier).

    Transfers to the island are arranged according to scheduled coordination days. You will receive confirmation of your transfer timing the moment you arrive at the Home Office


    📌ARRIVAL OVERVIEW📌

    Your journey will look like this:

    Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) → Home Office (Kota Kinabalu City) → Jetty Kastam Lama → One Ocean Nature Conservation Centre

    There is no airport pick-up provided. Please read the steps carefully below.


    📌STEP 1: ARRIVE AT KOTA KINABALU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BKI)📌

    After landing at BKI, you are responsible for arranging your own transport to our Home Office in Kota Kinabalu city.

    We strongly recommend downloading the Grab e-hailing app before arrival. Grab is widely used in Sabah and is the easiest way to book a safe and affordable ride from the airport.

    You may choose to:

    • Stay in Kota Kinabalu city independently, or

    • Stay at our Home Office (subject to availability and prior arrangement)

    The Home Office acts as the official meeting point before transfer to the island. All volunteers must report here before departure.


    📌STEP 2: HOME OFFICE TO JETTY KASTAM LAMA📌

    On your scheduled transfer day, our team will arrange taxi transport from the Home Office to Jetty Kastam Lama (you don't need to pay anything for this!)

    Travel time by road: approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic.

    NOTE: This transfer (taxi + boat) is covered as part of your program logistics.

    During the road journey, you may request short stops at:

    • ATM machines

    • Gas stations

    • Supermarkets

    • Banks

    Please ensure these stops are reasonable and not significantly out of route.

    Important:
    Prepare sufficient cash in advance. Once you reach Jetty Kastam Lama, the nearest ATM is approximately 30 minutes away by car, and card payments are rarely accepted in this area.


    📌STEP 3: JETTY KASTAM LAMA TO CONSERVATION CENTRE📌

    From Jetty Kastam Lama, a local fishing boat will transfer you to the island where the conservation centre is located on Usukan Island.

    Boat journey duration: 15–20 minutes.

    Please note:

    • Wear slippers or footwear that can get wet.

    • You may need to step into shallow water when boarding or disembarking.

    • Keep electronics inside a dry bag or waterproof backpack.

    Sea and weather conditions may occasionally affect departure timing. Flexibility is required.


    📌END OF YOUR VOLUNTEERING📌

    Depending on your flight details, you will depart back to One Ocean Home Office via:

    • Taxi (we will arrange this for you & you do not have to pay)
    • Boat Tranfer (we will arrange this for you & you do not have to pay)

    NOTE: If your flight is on the day where you volunteering period ends, you will depart 1 day before the day of your flight to prevent delays & trouble

    Example:
    2nd January: Volunteering ends & flight at 3pm

    You will depart on the 1st of January


    ⚠️IMPORTANT PRE-ARRIVAL PREPARATION (WE WILL SEND YOU A PRE-ARRIVAL GUIDE)⚠️

    1. Cash

    Cash is essential. On the island and in rural areas, card payments are unreliable or unavailable. Please prepare small denominations where possible.

    2. Internet & SIM Card

    There is no Wi-Fi on the island, and network coverage is limited.

    We strongly recommend purchasing a local Malaysian SIM card in Kota Kinabalu city before transfer. Based on previous volunteer experience, Celcom (Blue Edition plan) provides the most reliable coverage in the area.

    Set up and top up your SIM card in the city before departure. Self-top-up without a local bank account may not work.

    3. Luggage & Packing

    You will be living in a remote, solar-powered conservation centre.

    Expect:

    • Limited electricity (charging allowed only during specific hours)

    • No hot water

    • Rainwater showers

    • Simple shared living facilities

    Bring essential items such as:

    • Hiking shoes

    • Slippers

    • Reusable water bottle

    • Mosquito repellent

    • Dry bag

    • Modest clothing for rural areas

    • Personal toiletries

    Purchase any missing items in Kota Kinabalu city before transfer, as supplies are not available on the island.

    4. Travel Responsibility
