The Parrot Rescue Center is a unique wildlife management facility in southern Costa Rica, dedicated to the care, rehabilitation, and long-term protection of parrots and other species that require specialized attention. Operating entirely through donations and the commitment of volunteers, the Center has become a vital space where conservation is not only practiced but also taught and shared. The volunteer program has been specifically designed to provide participants with a high-value educational experience that combines practical training, cultural immersion, and direct involvement in conservation. By joining, volunteers do not simply assist with daily operations; they become part of a mission that has tangible impact on the preservation of species and ecosystems. The program offers a rare opportunity to learn in one of the most biodiverse regions of the world, where tropical forests, mountains, and rural communities converge to create a living laboratory of ecological and cultural richness. Participants will gain knowledge that extends far beyond animal care. They will explore the complexity of Costa Rica’s biodiversity, understand the challenges of conservation in practice, and engage with local communities whose traditions and livelihoods are intertwined with the natural environment. This experience is transformative: it strengthens professional careers in biology, environmental sciences, veterinary medicine, and related fields, while also fostering a deeper appreciation of the global importance of conservation. The certificate of completion awarded at the end of the program formally recognizes the hours of service and learning, but the true value lies in the skills acquired, the cultural connections established, and the contribution made to protecting wildlife.
Volunteers
As a volunteer you will come in close contact with over 70 parrots of different species! While the number of parrots at the rescue is increasing, volunteer numbers are not keeping up. Your contribution is enormous as the rescue needs your help feeding the birds, raking and washing aviaries, cutting lots of veggies, cooking, making toys, planting trees, trail maintenance and more! Some tasks may not be easy and can be physically demanding. But we do assign tasks that are comfortable and enjoyable for each volunteer. If you enjoy working with animals and are not afraid to get your hands dirty in the outdoors, then be part of an exciting experience. Volunteer contributions go towards animal care & husbandry, the day to day running of the shelter and the upgrading of the facilities. At this time, we accept up to 4-5 volunteers at a time.
