    About the program

Ecuador is known as being one of the world’s most biodiverse countries. When participating in this volunteer program, you will protect endangered wildlife in Ecuador by supporting in a local animal rescue center. The amazon basin of Ecuador is home to exotic animals like different types of monkeys, coatis, peccaries, kinkajous, tapirs, reptiles, parrots, toucans and other exotic birds, as well as wild cats and countless of species of exotic plants.

This project takes place in the amazon region of the country, about five hours away from Quito. The main goal of this project is to rescue and rehabilitate wild animals that have lived in inappropriate environments, like in small cages serving as attraction for tourists or in private households as pets. In addition, it also aims to help animals that have been victims of illegal animal trafficking. The project works with authorities to confiscate as many animals as possible from their harsh owners and bring them to the center. Animals are brought regularly by the police and people who want to protect the wildlife. The center opened in 2006 and calls several hectares of rainforest its own.

    Typical day

The Amazon Rainforest is known worldwide as the green lung of our planet. This volunteer experience gives you the opportunity to make a positive impact on Ecuador’s fragile ecosystem. Volunteers usually work with the locals, and this gives them the unique chance to even learn about the culture and traditions of the region.

On a typical work day, you will prepare food for the animals, clean and construct cages, clear hiking trails, maintain the center, and guide tourists around the center.

The center is open to visitors, as the entrance fee and donations are an important source of income for the center. By participating in this project, you will get to hold and play with some animals and nurse others back to health. You will feel very rewarded knowing that you helped animals, and you will - for sure - have an unforgettable experience.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
