    About the program

Volunteer in Sri Lanka with IVHQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization trusted by more than 155000 volunteers since 2007.

Make a meaningful difference by supporting temple renovation projects in the historic city of Kandy, located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Home to sacred Buddhist temples and rich cultural heritage, Kandy offers a unique setting for volunteers to contribute to the preservation of important religious and community landmarks while experiencing traditional Sri Lankan life.

You will help restore and maintain local temples by assisting with renovation, painting, cleaning, and general upkeep tasks. This fully hosted experience allows you to support cultural preservation efforts while immersing yourself in a community where temples play a central role in daily life and spiritual practice.

Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to preserve and maintain historic temples that serve as important spiritual, cultural, and community spaces. Many temples rely on volunteer support to remain safe, welcoming, and structurally sound. Your contribution helps protect cultural heritage, supports local communities, and ensures these sacred spaces can continue to be used for worship and community gatherings.

As a Temple Renovation volunteer in Kandy, your work will be practical, respectful, and rewarding:

    • Renovation Support: Assisting with painting walls, repairing small structures, cleaning temple grounds, and supporting basic restoration tasks.
    • Maintenance Work: Helping maintain pathways, gardens, and shared spaces to keep temple environments clean and welcoming.
    • Cultural Preservation: Supporting renovation activities that respect traditional building methods and cultural practices.
    • General Assistance: Preparing materials, organizing tools, and supporting daily renovation tasks under local guidance.

Volunteers work closely with local monks, temple caretakers, skilled workers, and fellow international volunteers. Local coordinators provide instruction on tasks, cultural etiquette, and safety guidelines, ensuring all work is carried out respectfully and in line with religious traditions.

No special equipment is required for this program. All tools and materials needed for renovation work are provided on site. Volunteers should bring modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, closed toe shoes suitable for physical work, and items appropriate for warm weather conditions.

No previous construction or renovation experience is required. A respectful attitude, willingness to learn, and sensitivity to cultural and religious customs are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.

Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Kandy with meals provided each day. Transport to and from temple renovation sites is arranged locally. Volunteers gain hands on experience in cultural preservation, build meaningful connections with local communities, and spend free time exploring Kandy’s temples, lakeside walks, tea plantations, and surrounding hill country. Available year round, this program offers a unique and culturally immersive opportunity to contribute to temple preservation in Sri Lanka.
