    About the program

Volunteer in South Africa with IVHQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization trusted by more than 155000 volunteers since 2007.

Make a meaningful difference supporting animal welfare in Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most iconic cities. Surrounded by dramatic coastlines, mountains, and vibrant communities, Cape Town offers an inspiring setting for volunteers passionate about protecting animals while experiencing life in a culturally diverse and scenic destination.

You will help care for rescued and abandoned animals by assisting local shelters and animal welfare organizations. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to ethical animal care while gaining hands on experience and exploring one of Africa’s most dynamic cities.

Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to improve the wellbeing and quality of life for animals that have been neglected, abused, or abandoned. Many animal shelters operate with limited funding and staff, and volunteers provide essential daily support that helps ensure animals receive proper care, attention, and enrichment while awaiting recovery or adoption.

As an Animal Care volunteer in Cape Town, your work will be hands on, compassionate, and varied:

    • Animal Care: Feeding animals, cleaning enclosures, providing fresh water, and supporting daily care routines to maintain healthy living conditions.
    • Exercise and Socialization: Walking dogs, playing with animals, and helping socialize them to improve behavior, confidence, and adoptability.
    • Shelter Support: Assisting with cleaning, laundry, organizing supplies, and maintaining safe, comfortable shelter environments.
    • General Assistance: Supporting basic grooming tasks, helping during veterinary visits when required, and assisting with awareness or adoption activities where appropriate.

Volunteers work closely with local animal care staff, shelter coordinators, veterinarians, and fellow international volunteers. Local teams provide training on safe animal handling, daily routines, and welfare standards, ensuring all care is delivered responsibly and ethically.

No special equipment is required for this program. All tools and supplies needed for animal care are provided on site. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for hands on work, closed toe shoes, and items that can get dirty. A willingness to work outdoors and around animals is important.

No previous animal care experience is required. Compassion, reliability, and a genuine love for animals are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.

Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Cape Town with meals provided each day. Transport to and from animal care placements is arranged locally. Volunteers gain valuable experience in animal welfare, connect with like minded volunteers from around the world, and spend free time exploring Cape Town’s beaches, mountains, wildlife reserves, and cultural attractions. Available year round, this program offers a meaningful and well supported opportunity to support animal welfare in South Africa.
