    About the program

Volunteer in Laos with IVHQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization trusted by more than 155000 volunteers since 2007.

Make a meaningful difference by supporting community construction and renovation projects in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town known for its traditional architecture, riverside setting, and strong sense of community. This program offers volunteers the opportunity to contribute to essential development projects while experiencing daily life in one of Laos’ most culturally significant locations.

You will help improve community facilities by assisting with construction, repairs, painting, and general renovation tasks at schools, community centers, and local buildings. This fully hosted experience allows you to support local development efforts while immersing yourself in a peaceful and culturally rich environment.

Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to enhance and maintain facilities that support education, community programs, and daily life for local residents. Many buildings rely on volunteer support for upkeep and improvement due to limited resources. Your contribution helps create safer, more functional, and more welcoming spaces that benefit children, families, and community groups.

As a Construction and Renovation volunteer in Luang Prabang, your work will be practical, physical, and rewarding:

    • Building Support: Assisting with basic construction tasks such as mixing cement, carrying materials, laying bricks, and supporting simple structural improvements.
    • Renovation Work: Painting walls, repairing classrooms or community buildings, and refreshing facilities affected by wear and tear.
    • Community Projects: Supporting small scale building initiatives based on current local needs and priorities.
    • Site Maintenance: Preparing work areas, organizing tools, cleaning sites, and supporting safe working conditions.

Volunteers work alongside experienced local builders, project coordinators, and fellow international volunteers. Local staff provide task instruction, demonstrate techniques, and oversee safety, while volunteers contribute energy, teamwork, and hands on support.

No special equipment is required for this program. All construction tools, materials, and basic safety equipment are provided on site. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for physical work, closed toe shoes, and items appropriate for warm and humid weather.

No previous construction experience is required. A willingness to learn, physical readiness, and a positive attitude are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.

Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Luang Prabang with meals provided each day. Transport to and from construction sites is arranged locally. Volunteers gain practical building experience, work closely with local communities, and spend free time exploring Luang Prabang’s temples, rivers, markets, and surrounding countryside. Available year round, this program offers a rewarding and culturally immersive opportunity to support community development in Laos.
