Make a meaningful difference supporting elderly care initiatives in Livingstone, a welcoming town near the world famous Victoria Falls. This program focuses on assisting older members of the community who may lack regular support, offering volunteers the opportunity to contribute to dignity, companionship, and wellbeing for elderly individuals.
You will assist local caregivers and community organizations by providing support, companionship, and assistance with daily activities for elderly community members. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to community wellbeing while experiencing life in a close knit Zambian setting.
Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to improve quality of life and daily support for elderly individuals, many of whom face challenges related to health, mobility, or social isolation. Volunteers help strengthen care routines, provide companionship, and support community based elderly programs that promote respect, comfort, and connection.
As an Elderly Care volunteer in Livingstone, your duties will be compassionate, practical, and meaningful:
- Companionship Support: Spending time with elderly individuals through conversation, games, storytelling, and shared activities that reduce isolation.
- Daily Assistance: Helping with light daily tasks, meal support where appropriate, and assisting caregivers with routine activities.
- Activity Engagement: Supporting recreational activities, gentle exercises, and social programs designed to keep elderly participants active and engaged.
- Community Support: Assisting with home visits, community outreach, and helping organize activities that support elderly wellbeing.
Volunteers work closely with local caregivers, community health workers, program coordinators, and fellow international volunteers. Local staff provide guidance on appropriate care practices, cultural expectations, and individual needs to ensure respectful and safe support.
No special equipment is required for this program. All care materials and resources are provided by the community organizations. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for active, hands on work and closed toe shoes. A respectful, patient approach is essential.
No previous elderly care experience is required. Compassion, patience, reliability, and a genuine interest in supporting older community members are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.
Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Livingstone with meals provided each day. Transport to and from elderly care placements is arranged locally. Volunteers gain meaningful experience in community care, build strong connections with local residents and fellow volunteers, and spend free time exploring Livingstone’s cultural sites, local markets, wildlife areas, and the nearby Victoria Falls. Available year round, this program offers a supportive and impactful opportunity to support elderly care in Zambia.
