Ghana’s tropical coastline is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and biodiversity, home to lush vegetation, vibrant marine life, and rare wildlife species. Yet this fragile environment is increasingly under threat from pollution, coastal erosion, and poor waste management. A significant portion of the waste generated in Accra, the country’s capital, finds its way into the ocean and washes up on beaches across the country—impacting both ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

For many of these communities, the environmental damage is an everyday reality, even if the long-term consequences aren't fully understood. In seaside villages, coastal erosion is becoming a critical issue. Homes that once stood safely inland are now at risk of being swallowed by the sea. In some cases, huts have already been washed away, and relocating to safer ground is often financially out of reach for many families.

Wildlife, too, is suffering. Sea turtles, once common along Ghana’s beaches during nesting season from September to January, have become increasingly rare. Pollution and the destruction of nesting grounds have led to a dramatic decline in their numbers. Fish populations are also shrinking, largely due to overfishing by industrial fleets—despite the fact that fishing remains the primary source of income for around 10% of the population.

As a volunteer in this coastal conservation project, you’ll be part of a dedicated effort to protect the environment and promote sustainable living. Your placement will be in Axim, a small town on Ghana’s western coast, where you’ll work alongside a well-established eco-resort that has been a leader in environmental education and sustainable development for over 25 years.

The resort, set across 45 hectares of beautiful coastline, plays an essential role in the local community. It creates secure jobs, trains disadvantaged individuals, and runs ongoing outreach programs focused on environmental awareness—all while ensuring the responsible use of natural resources. Profits from the resort are reinvested into new ecological and social initiatives that benefit the region.

As a volunteer, you’ll help support educational activities, take part in conservation efforts, and contribute to sustainable development in meaningful ways. From beach cleanups and sea turtle protection to community education and awareness campaigns, your work will directly support long-term environmental change.
