    About the program

Volunteer in Zanzibar with IVHQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization trusted by more than 155000 volunteers since 2007.

Make a meaningful difference supporting children and adults with special needs in Zanzibar, a culturally rich island off the coast of Tanzania known for its strong community values and welcoming spirit. This program takes place in local schools and care centers that support individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, offering volunteers the opportunity to contribute to inclusive care while experiencing island life and Swahili culture.

You will assist local caregivers and educators by providing support, encouragement, and individual attention to people with special needs. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to inclusive community development while gaining insight into disability support within a local cultural context.

Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to improve quality of life, inclusion, and daily support for individuals with special needs. Many care centers in Zanzibar operate with limited resources and staffing. Volunteers help strengthen care routines, learning activities, and social interaction by offering additional hands on support and positive engagement.

As a Special Needs Care volunteer in Zanzibar, your duties will be compassionate, practical, and meaningful:

    • Care Support: Assisting with daily routines such as meals, mobility support where appropriate, and helping individuals safely participate in activities.
    • Learning and Activity Support: Supporting basic educational activities, life skills development, arts and crafts, music, and play based learning.
    • Emotional and Social Support: Providing patience, encouragement, and positive interaction that helps build confidence, trust, and social connection.
    • Center Assistance: Helping staff prepare activities, organize materials, and maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.

Volunteers work closely with trained local caregivers, teachers, and fellow international volunteers. Local staff provide guidance on individual needs, appropriate care practices, and cultural considerations, ensuring all activities are carried out respectfully, ethically, and safely.

No special equipment is required for this program. All care materials and activity resources are provided by the centers. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for active, hands on work, closed toe shoes, and a calm, respectful attitude.

No prior experience with special needs care is required, though it is welcomed. Compassion, patience, adaptability, and a genuine willingness to learn are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.

Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Zanzibar with meals provided each day. Transport to and from care placements is arranged locally. Volunteers gain meaningful experience in disability support, build strong connections with local communities and fellow volunteers, and spend free time exploring Zanzibar’s beaches, historic Stone Town, villages, and natural attractions. Available year round, this program offers a supportive and impactful opportunity to promote inclusion and care for people with special needs in Zanzibar.
