    About the program

Volunteer in Sri Lanka with IVHQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization trusted by more than 155000 volunteers since 2007.

Make a meaningful difference supporting children and adults with special needs in the historic city of Kandy, located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. This program takes place in schools and care centers that support individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, offering volunteers the opportunity to contribute to inclusive care while experiencing life in a culturally rich region.

You will assist local caregivers and educators by providing support, encouragement, and individual attention to people with special needs. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to inclusive community development while gaining valuable insight into disability support in a Sri Lankan context.

Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to improve quality of life, inclusion, and daily support for individuals with special needs. Many care centers operate with limited resources and staffing, and volunteers help bridge this gap by offering additional assistance that enhances care routines, learning opportunities, and social interaction.

As a Special Needs Care volunteer in Kandy, your duties will be compassionate, hands on, and varied:

    • Care Support: Assisting with daily routines such as meals, mobility support where appropriate, and helping individuals participate safely in activities.
    • Learning and Activity Support: Helping with basic educational activities, life skills training, arts and crafts, music, and play based learning.
    • Emotional and Social Support: Providing patience, encouragement, and positive interaction that helps build confidence and social connection.
    • Center Assistance: Supporting staff with preparing activities, organizing materials, and maintaining a safe, welcoming environment.

Volunteers work closely with trained local caregivers, teachers, therapists, and fellow international volunteers. Local staff provide guidance on individual needs, appropriate care practices, and cultural considerations, ensuring all activities are carried out respectfully and safely.

No special equipment is required for this program. All care materials and activity resources are provided by the centers. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for active, hands on work and closed toe shoes. A calm, respectful approach is essential.

No prior experience with special needs is required, though it is welcomed. Compassion, patience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.

Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Kandy with meals provided each day. Transport to and from care placements is arranged locally. Volunteers gain meaningful experience in disability support, connect with volunteers from around the world, and spend free time exploring Kandy’s temples, lakeside walks, botanical gardens, and surrounding hill country. Available year round, this program offers a supportive and impactful opportunity to promote inclusion and care for people with special needs in Sri Lanka.
