    About the program

Volunteer in South Africa with IVHQ, the world’s leading volunteer travel organization trusted by more than 155000 volunteers since 2007.

Make a meaningful difference by supporting surf outreach programs in Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most iconic coastal cities. With its world class beaches and strong surf culture, Cape Town offers a unique setting for volunteers to use sport and the ocean as tools for youth development, confidence building, and positive social change.

You will support local surf outreach initiatives that introduce children and young people from disadvantaged communities to surfing and ocean based activities. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to youth empowerment while enjoying life in a city renowned for its natural beauty and vibrant culture.

Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to use surfing as a platform for personal growth, resilience, and community connection. Many young participants have limited access to recreational opportunities or safe spaces. Surf outreach programs provide structured, supportive environments where participants can build confidence, develop life skills, and form positive relationships through ocean based activities. Volunteers play an important role in delivering safe, engaging, and encouraging surf sessions.

As a Surf Outreach volunteer in Cape Town, your role will be active, hands on, and inspiring:

    • Surf Session Support: Assisting coaches during surf lessons, helping participants enter and exit the water safely, and offering encouragement in the waves.
    • Youth Mentorship: Supporting children and teens through positive interaction, teamwork, and role modeling both in and out of the water.
    • Beach Activities: Helping run beach based games, warm ups, and educational activities related to ocean safety and environmental awareness.
    • Program Assistance: Setting up and packing down equipment, organizing participants, and supporting daily outreach operations.

Volunteers work closely with qualified surf instructors, youth mentors, program coordinators, and fellow international volunteers. Local staff provide training on ocean safety, surf instruction methods, and safeguarding practices to ensure all activities are safe, inclusive, and impactful.

No special equipment is required for this program. Surfboards, wetsuits, and safety equipment are provided by the outreach organizations. Volunteers should bring swimwear, towels, sunscreen, and warm clothing for time spent on the beach. Basic swimming ability and comfort in the ocean are recommended.

No previous surfing experience is required. Enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and a willingness to support and encourage young participants are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.

Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Cape Town with meals provided each day. Transport to and from surf outreach locations is arranged locally. Volunteers gain meaningful experience in youth development through sport, connect with volunteers from around the world, and spend free time exploring Cape Town’s beaches, surf spots, mountains, and cultural attractions. Available year round, this program offers a unique and rewarding opportunity to empower young people through surf outreach in South Africa.
