A typical day for a volunteer commences at 8am. We begin with a team briefing to discuss the day’s priorities and any special needs of the animals in care. Volunteers start by preparing nutritious meals and feeding a variety of native wildlife, dependent on who is currently in care, such as kangaroos, wallaroos, and native birds. Following feeding, volunteers clean and maintain enclosures to ensure hygienic, comfortable spaces that support animal recovery.
During the morning shift (8am to 12noon), volunteers assist with monitoring animal health and behavior, recording observations that help our carers tailor rehabilitation plans. Enrichment activities are also an important part of the day, encouraging natural behaviors through interaction and environmental stimulation. This time will also include the cleaning of the common areas on a daily basis, treatment room, outdoor kitchen area, bathroom, inside kitchen, lounge and dining room. Washing of the dirty towels, joey bags etc are done and hung on the line to dry, and folded and put away in the afternoon, weather permitting. Additional tasks may include habitat maintenance, such as bushland clearing/revegetation, garden care, and supporting ongoing projects like building and maintaining our Eco Pond.
We break for lunch at 12noon for an hour and a half.
The afternoon shift (1.30pm to 5.00pm) volunteers will have set tasks each day for this period. List of tasks can include but not limited to: mowing the lawns, enclosure cleaning, garden work, preparing the fundraising can collection and prepare evening meals for the animals and ensure all are secure for the night. We will have a roster set up for all to view and understand.
However, the nature of wildlife rescue means no two days are the same. There may be unexpected moments where an emergency rescue call arrives, and volunteers drop everything to respond promptly, transporting injured or orphaned animals to the sanctuary for immediate care. Flexibility and a readiness to act quickly are essential parts of our volunteer program.
Volunteers leave the day having made a meaningful contribution, gained valuable hands-on experience, and helped ensure the safe rehabilitation and eventual release of Australia’s native wildlife.
Please note that from December to April, summer temperatures in our region can be very hot. Volunteers working during this time should be prepared to work outdoors in the heat. We provide sun hats and sunscreen to help protect against sun exposure.
