    Help create a positive and safe environment for many endangered species, many of which have been part of the darker side of Thailand's tourism trade.

    Despite their natural beauty, many of Thailand’s forest areas are suffering from illegal poaching, habitat destruction, and unsustainable tourism practices. While the trees may still stand tall, animals like elephants, gibbons, hornbills, and leopards are disappearing from their natural habitats. ..

    Despite their natural beauty, many of Thailand’s forest areas are suffering from illegal poaching, habitat destruction, and unsustainable tourism practices. While the trees may still stand tall, animals like elephants, gibbons, hornbills, and leopards are disappearing from their natural habitats. These forests are turning into quiet, lifeless spaces—a tragic sign of biodiversity loss.

    The wildlife sanctuary in Thailand was started back in 2001 and is spread across seven acres. As a sanctuary for mistreated animals, the facility mainly takes care of those that are sick or handicapped, which tends to include a lot which have been kept as pets or used within the tourism industry. For example, the project has a crocodile who became too big for his owner to keep at his home, whereas there are also two elephants who were used in the tourist industry for many years, as well as many other animals. Once the animals are nursed back up to full strength they are, where possible, released back into the wild.

    Unfortunately, for numerous reasons, some are not able to be released so they will stay in the sanctuary. Some animals are born on site and spend their entire lives there. For these animals, living in the wild is just not possible due to becoming used to a certain way of life around their parents, which is why the educational side of the foundation is so important. They visit children in local schools, in the hope that by passing on knowledge, the future generations can take better care of wildlife.

    Endangered species worldwide depend on the help and protection of animal rights activists. In Thailand, greed, corruption and above all, a low level of education are the causes for a decrease in specie numbers. Also, due to a lack of awareness across the country of the need to conserve plants and the environment due to the role they play for the habitats, our animal friends need as much help as we can give them!

    You’ll have the chance to take an active role in protecting endangered species and also support the team in educating the local population. You'll find quite the mix of animals, from monkeys, bears and birds, through to elephants and wolves.

The main goal is to rehabilitate the animals and, whenever possible, prepare them for a safe return to the wild.

    Feeding the animals is one of your core responsibilities—and it’s often more challenging and creative than it sounds. Rather than simply placing food in bowls, volunteers are encouraged to recreate natural feeding scenarios. For example, monkeys are required to forage for their food, while elephants may find theirs hidden inside bamboo stalks or nets suspended high in the treetops. You’ll help harvest fruit, shop for supplies, and prepare animal-appropriate meals in the center’s dedicated “wildlife kitchen.”

    You’ll also assist in daily animal care, which includes cleaning enclosures and shelters. Depending on the species, this can be quite demanding. Safety is a top priority, especially when working with potentially dangerous animals like monkeys or bears. Special protocols are in place, such as using entry locks and distraction techniques, to ensure both your safety and the animals’ well-being.

    The team is equally committed when it comes to releasing animals back into the wild. For example, monkeys are often released in pairs on small islands off Thailand’s coast, where they are closely monitored. These islands act as natural barriers, making it easier to observe their behavior and, if necessary, recapture them for further care.

    In addition to hands-on animal work, you’ll also help maintain the facilities. This part of the experience requires physical endurance, as it involves a lot of manual labor and constant activity. Keeping your own accommodation clean and taking on small household duties are also part of the daily routine, contributing to a sense of shared responsibility and teamwork.

    There is a variety of different things you may be involved with on a daily basis. Your input is massively appreciated, as, without volunteers, there are a number of roles that would be hard to complete for the team on their own. Your hours are agreed on when you arrive, but you tend to work across 6 days, for about 6 or 7 hours, dependent on weather, number of volunteers and the season. Tasks include:

The Khao Yai National Park, for example, is a haven for wildlife and exotic plant species, while the Erawan National Park boasts stunning waterfalls and crystal-clear waters.     If you're interested in history, the nearby city of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-visit. This historical city is rich with ancient temples and ruins, such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Mahathat, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, which showcase Thailand’s glorious past.

    For those seeking more adventure, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Take a bike tour through the rural landscapes of Central Thailand or embark on a thrilling rafting experience on the Mae Taeng River.     Accommodation

    You'll live in a shared bungalow with other volunteers. At the main house, there is a large terrace area, with a main table where you can eat and spend time with the other volunteers. It's a great place to chill out, or even catch a bit of sun! There's also a kitchen, where your lunch and dinner are cooked. For your breakfast there is a variety of foods available. When you move in, the cleaning staff will come to clean the bungalow. Afterwards you and your flatmates are responsible for the cleanliness of the bungalow. There are plenty of power outlets in the bedrooms and you can use the Wi-Fi in the kitchen. You will share a bathroom with cold water only. To make it easier for you to explore the beaches nearby, it is possible to rent a scooter near the location and get to know the area. 



    Food & Beverages

    You'll eat in a similar way to the locals and the local cuisine, so expect to get to know new foods and delicacies! You're provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner in a buffet style throughout the work week, and there's also a communal kitchen available if you ever fancy a little nibble! If you do have any dietary requirements, please let us know about them as far in advance as possible, and we will do our best to accommodate them, or we will inform you if the local area can't.

    Details on arrival

    Before you even depart, our team in Munich will take you through every step of the process, from answering your questions about the program, through to advising you where to go for your visa. We are here to help you and to ensure that you feel totally comfortable (and prepared!) before departing.

    You can fly into one of the two international airports in Bangkok. For the Wildlife Conservation Project or Elephant Animal Shelter Project, you can be picked up by a member of the team in Bangkok (for an additional fee). The project takes arrivals every Sunday. The taxi ride then takes about three hours to arrive at the accommodation (you are also more than welcome to travel there by yourself if you wish). In advance, you will receive a detailed handout, in which you will find all the details on how to get there by public transport.

    As soon as you arrive at the project, you will be welcomed by the local team. They'll show you your new accommodation, as well as introduce you to the house rules, your tasks, local medical facilities and more. You will receive a comprehensive tour of the local area and get to know your fellow co-workers on site.
