Make a meaningful difference by supporting women’s education and empowerment initiatives in the historic city of Kandy, located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Surrounded by lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Kandy provides a supportive and inspiring environment for volunteers who want to contribute to gender equality and community development.
You will assist local organizations that work with women from disadvantaged backgrounds, supporting education programs, skills development, and confidence building activities. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to meaningful social change while gaining insight into the lives, challenges, and strengths of women in Sri Lankan communities.
Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to empower women through education, life skills training, and access to supportive learning environments. Many women face barriers related to education, employment, and independence. Volunteers help strengthen existing programs by providing additional support, encouragement, and practical assistance that contributes to improved confidence, self reliance, and long term wellbeing.
As a Women’s Education volunteer in Kandy, your role will be community focused, meaningful, and varied:
- Education Support: Assisting with basic literacy, numeracy, or English lessons depending on program needs and participant levels.
- Skills Development: Supporting workshops focused on vocational skills, financial literacy, health awareness, or life skills.
- Program Assistance: Helping prepare learning materials, organize sessions, and support daily activities at women’s centers.
- Community Engagement: Encouraging participation, supporting group discussions, and helping foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
Volunteers work closely with local educators, program coordinators, community leaders, and fellow international volunteers. Local staff provide guidance on cultural expectations, program goals, and appropriate teaching approaches, while volunteers contribute encouragement, patience, and additional capacity that strengthens women’s education initiatives.
No special equipment is required for this program. All learning materials and resources are provided by the women’s centers. Volunteers may bring small stationery items or a personal laptop if they wish, but this is optional. Modest, comfortable clothing suitable for community and classroom settings is recommended.
No previous teaching or development experience is required. Cultural sensitivity, empathy, adaptability, and a genuine interest in supporting women’s empowerment are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.
Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Kandy with meals provided each day. Transport to and from women’s education placements is arranged locally. Volunteers gain valuable insight into gender focused community development, build meaningful connections with local women, and spend free time exploring Kandy’s temples, lakeside walks, botanical gardens, tea plantations, and surrounding hill country. Available year round, this program offers a supportive and impactful opportunity to contribute to women’s education and empowerment in Sri Lanka.
