Make a meaningful difference by supporting education initiatives in Zanzibar, a culturally rich island off the coast of Tanzania known for its Swahili heritage, vibrant communities, and warm hospitality. Teaching placements are based in local schools where additional classroom support plays an important role in improving learning outcomes for students.
You will assist local teachers and support students by helping deliver lessons, providing extra attention, and encouraging participation in classrooms that often have limited resources. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to educational development while immersing yourself in daily life on a beautiful island with a strong sense of community.
Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to improve access to quality education and support student development in local schools. Many schools in Zanzibar face large class sizes and limited teaching materials. Volunteers help reduce pressure on teachers, support lesson delivery, and create more engaging and supportive learning environments that encourage confidence and curiosity among students.
As a Teaching volunteer in Zanzibar, your duties will be interactive, creative, and rewarding:
- Classroom Support: Assisting local teachers with lessons in subjects such as English, mathematics, and general studies.
- Student Engagement: Helping students with reading, writing, pronunciation, and basic numeracy through one on one or small group support.
- Creative Learning: Leading songs, games, storytelling, and interactive activities that make lessons engaging and accessible.
- School Assistance: Helping prepare teaching materials, organize classrooms, and support daily school routines.
Volunteers work closely with local teachers, school staff, and fellow international volunteers. Local educators provide lesson guidance, classroom structure, and cultural context, while volunteers contribute energy, creativity, and additional attention that enhances the learning experience for students.
No special equipment is required for this program. All teaching materials are provided by the schools. Volunteers may bring small teaching aids or stationery if they wish, but this is optional. Comfortable, modest clothing suitable for a school environment is recommended.
No previous teaching experience is required. Clear English communication, patience, cultural sensitivity, and a positive attitude toward working with children are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.
Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Zanzibar with meals provided each day. Transport to and from school placements is arranged locally. Volunteers gain hands on classroom experience, connect with volunteers from around the world, and spend free time exploring Zanzibar’s beaches, historic Stone Town, local villages, and cultural landmarks. Available year round, this program offers a supportive and culturally immersive opportunity to contribute to education in Zanzibar.
