Make a meaningful difference supporting ethical elephant conservation in the beautiful lowland region of Chitwan, Nepal. This area is known for its lush forests, rivers, and wildlife reserves, offering volunteers the opportunity to contribute to responsible animal welfare while experiencing one of Nepal’s most important conservation regions.
You will help support the wellbeing of rescued and retired elephants by assisting with daily care routines and conservation focused activities that prioritize ethical treatment and natural behavior. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to wildlife protection while living close to nature in a peaceful rural environment.
Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to promote ethical elephant care and support long term conservation efforts that move away from exploitative practices. Many elephants in the region were previously used for tourism or labor. Volunteers help improve their quality of life by supporting sanctuaries that focus on humane care, enrichment, and natural living conditions.
As an Elephant Conservation volunteer in Nepal, your work will be hands on, outdoors, and deeply rewarding:
- Elephant Care Support: Assisting with preparing food, feeding elephants, and observing their health and behavior under staff supervision.
- Habitat Maintenance: Helping clean living areas, maintain pathways, and support the upkeep of elephant enclosures and surrounding environments.
- Environmental Activities: Supporting conservation tasks such as planting vegetation, maintaining natural spaces, and participating in eco focused initiatives.
- Education and Awareness: Learning about elephant welfare, conservation challenges, and ethical tourism practices through daily interaction with local experts.
Volunteers work closely with experienced local caretakers, conservation staff, and fellow international volunteers. Local teams provide guidance on safe elephant interaction, daily routines, and conservation principles, ensuring all activities are ethical and respectful to both animals and the environment.
No special equipment is required for this program. All tools and materials needed for daily tasks are provided on site. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor and farm style environments, sturdy closed toe shoes, and items appropriate for warm and humid conditions.
No previous animal care experience is required. A genuine interest in wildlife conservation, respect for animals, and a willingness to work outdoors are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.
Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house near the conservation site with meals provided each day. Transport to and from the project location is arranged locally. Volunteers gain valuable insight into ethical elephant care, connect with conservation focused volunteers from around the world, and spend free time exploring nearby national parks, villages, and natural landscapes. Available year round, this program offers a meaningful and well supported opportunity to contribute to elephant conservation in Nepal.
